Many of my friends and colleagues understand that they should not attend a Rat Race for the rest of their lives. In most cases, however, the confusion brings clarity. How would one of them know if they are on the right path in their lives or part of this dreaded and mindless rat race?
The irony is that most of them are in council and do not even know it. If I tell them the fact on the face, nobody will believe me. On the other hand, I renounce my duty as a friend if I do not let them know that they are part of this vicious cycle that has no end. I want them to have a fair chance of getting out of this race. They will continue to live their lives and in the end would not achieve anything to be proud of. They should make decisions and do something else in their lives, otherwise they run out of time. They can have an impact on this world, it's just that they need to be aware that they are also a victim of how we were raised in our society. They have to take care of their lives before it's too late.
Given this dilemma, I thought of giving a list of symptoms in which I got stuck in a Rat Race. How do I know these symptoms? I've been through each one of them at some point in my life, so I have a first-hand experience. These symptoms help everyone to find out if they are running this meaningless race. Here we go..
If you are exposed to one or more of the following situations in your personal or professional life, you will most likely run a Rat Race - a race that may be worth nothing despite all the hard work you put into it.
1. You work many hours on a job that you are not really passionate about.
You may have friends in your workplace, you can work your day happily, but are you really charged when you think about what you do every day at work? Does every morning bring you excitement when you think about your work? There is a very easy way to find out if you are really passionate or not. Imagine for a moment that you have no financial worries in your life. Would you still choose to go to work every day, even if you have not paid anything? If the answer is no, then you are certainly a victim of this social environment that will make you a rat in this rat race. Better try to find a mission of a lifetime. They work hard but do not know where to go. It's just like driving a car at high speed, but I do not know where to go. It's like paying any game without a goal, which would ensure victory. What happens if you continue what you do today? Your life will end in frustration and you will not achieve anything meaningful. You will only regret it at the end of your life.
2. You hate the traffic.
You are one of those who commute to and from the office for at least an hour. I often hear my colleagues tingle about it, but they do nothing but cribbing. They never think about what they can do to change the situation. They are all determined by situations.
3. They worry about the next day in the office.
At the end of the day you do not like to cook. You just want to have a drink or dinner and go to bed because you have planned a number of activities for the next day. Your mind plans for the next day when you go to bed. They have stopped finding more happiness in smaller things in life.
4. Hobbies !! What are you?
You used to have a few hobbies that you think are past. You can say that someday you would revive them, but nothing will change unless you change what you do every day. As you look at recent years, you have become more active day by day. The competition at your workplace has just increased a bit more than you have climbed a few ladders. To continue climbing, it takes more time and energy. Who has time to pursue the old hobbies that are believed to be just a children's festival.
5. They have stopped finding happiness in smaller things.
With all the hours you and your spouse are working, you have forgotten the habit of doing things together. The joy of cooking together, the joy of watching TV together, the joy of playing with children together, the joy of chatting and spending time together - all of this does not seem to have much value in your life.
6. The children are more stress than joy.
Kids want their time, not the jazzy toys. You can play happily with a broken and a shabby toy when you're ready to spend your time with them. Instead, we go the other way. We have no time for them, although we have money and are ready to buy a new toy for them. Sorry, does not work that way at all. The equation just has to be reversed.
7. You feel more and more alienated from your family.
Family holidays, once or twice a year, are the only family time you spend with pleasure, provided you do not carry your office with you during the holidays. You deserve the same joy every day in your life.
8. They believe in TGIF.
TGIF (Thank God Its Friday) is synonymous with freedom today. The excitement, energy and bliss you get on Friday night are some of the features that a financially free person experiences in everyday life. How good would life be?
9. Your weekend just flies by.
Come on the weekend, when you've repaired the dripping faucet, cleaned up the messy areas of your home, done grocery shopping, seen TV soaps, done the laundry and ironing, and got on with the paperwork to deal with the presentation on Monday morning your workplace has gone your weekend. As it happens every week, it turned out to be an anti-climax. Now you have to wait another 5 days for the weekend.
10. You are always connected.
On weekdays or weekends, there is no escape route to a workplace at work, because the new technology ensures that you can enter any part of the world at any time of the day or night.
11. You never have enough money.
They make good money, but it never seems to be enough. There is always something to buy - for your spouse, for your child or for your home. The bills drill a bigger hole every month. You are always waiting for the next salary credit in your bank account. If you've changed jobs, been promoted, or worked a bit more, this might have helped cover your expenses. Sorry, but you know that this change will not help. It has not helped so far and should not work in the future.
12. You have a lifestyle (illness).
Although working long hours has led to a beautiful car, a beautiful house and a beautiful lifestyle, it is very likely that stress and thus all lifestyle illnesses arise. It has helped you to stay one step ahead of your friends, both in lifestyle and lifestyle illnesses.
13. You do not know how to deal effectively with the earned money.
You earn a lot, but you do not have to do with what you earn. You always seem to have too little time to think about how to invest and manage your money. Sad, but true, you are leaving your family and your health to earn money, but do not know what to do with the money you have earned. Is not that sad and ironic?
14. Your devices are more stress than help.
You have acquired a lot of modern equipment, with the assumption that this would at least bring some comfort to your life, if not luck. They have definitely brought some excitement for some time. As your craving for the latest gadget has accelerated, spending most of your weekend spending time focusing on these gadgets and their associated issues.
If you sit back and think about all the above, you may feel like sitting on a hamster's treadmill. You run hard, very hard, just to stay in the same place. It is not necessary for you to experience all of the above characteristics, but even if you experience some of them, you are part of that race that defeats itself.
You can stay in this race as long as you like. It is a very comfortable zone because you got used to it. You can spend your entire life with it because the colleagues around you do it. But if you want your life to have some meaning and you do not want to regret it at the end of your life, you have to leave that breed.
Financial Freedom offers such a way to get out of this race. I shared my insights during my journey from the rat race to financial freedom in a book with the same title. You have to plan your own way and go your own journey. You have to face your own challenges and find your own ways to deal with your situations. But you can definitely take advantage of what I experienced and documented in the book.
The key is to make a decision and take the first step. Rest will follow. I wish you all the best
